SPALDING COUNTY, Ga. — The Spalding County Sheriff's office says a 50-year-old man is now in custody after firing shots at his girlfriend and barricading himself inside a home, resulting in a SWAT situation Thursday night.
Authorities responded to the home off Terry Drive when the suspect's girlfriend called police to say he became intoxicated and violent.
She said when she attempted to leave the home, Stephen Kirby got a 9mm pistol and fired a shot. She told police he had other weapons inside the home and had "extensive tactical training."
Sheriff Darrell Dix said with they unsuccessfully tried to make contact with Kirby, they called the SWAT team and obtained search warrants.
After more than two hours, authorities began deploying gas rounds into the home, Dix said.
At 10:16 p.m., Kirby exited the home and surrendered without incident.
He is being held in the Spalding County Jail on charges of aggravated assault.
Dix said they spoke to the victim who is "shaken," but "doing OK."
"This incident had the potential to end tragically, but there were a lot of people that were praying for a peaceful outcome and those prayers were answered," Dix said.
