Man learns sentence for killing cousin at abandoned Stone Mountain home, DA says

Steven O'Neal Smith was found guilty on felony murder and aggravated assault charges on Wednesday. Shortly after, a judge sentenced him.

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. — A 42-year-old man will now spend the rest of his life in prison for killing his cousin at an abandoned Stone Mountain home in 2019, according to the district attorney.

Steven O'Neal Smith was found guilty on felony murder and aggravated assault charges on Wednesday. Shortly after, a judge sentenced him to life.

It all happened on April 9, 2019 at the home located on Lauren Parkway where Antonio Carter, 36, was stabbed.

A man who lived at a home close by discovered Carter and called 911. Carter was taken to a nearby hospital where he died, the district attorney's office said.

When police arrived at the neighbor's home, they then followed a trail of blood behind the home to an abandoned house. Police spoke with relatives who said Carter and Smith lived at the abandoned home together. Neighbors told police they saw Smith get a kitchen knife and walk toward the abandoned home, said the district attorney.

Hours later, police then found Smith not far from the crime scene covered in Carter's blood. The district attorney's office did not give a motive.
