'GTA, but in real life?' | Newly released video of stolen ambulance chase shows riveting footage

Multiple agencies joined the pursuit, which winded through Henry and Clayton counties on April 17.

GEORGIA, USA — Atlanta Police posted newly released footage after a man allegedly stole an ambulance outside the Piedmont Henry Hospital, leading officers on a multi-jurisdictional chase on April 17.

"GTA, but in real life?" the department questioned about the outrageous chase and capture.

Multiple agencies joined the pursuit, which winded through Henry and Clayton counties.

The medics were still inside the ambulance but managed to escape by jumping out of the back at some point.

The footage is almost six minutes long, with radio traffic, blaring sirens and switches back and forth between the law enforcement officers' view and the helicopter view of the chase on Jonesboro Road.

It starts with an overhead shot from the police helicopter, showing the ambulance swerving in and out of traffic. Several law enforcement vehicles surround the emergency vehicle.

"I'm pursuing the ambulance, trying to get in front of it," an Atlanta Police officer can be heard speaking to his radio.

A minute into the footage, a Georgia State Patrol Trooper tries to perform a pit maneuver but is unsuccessful.

At the nearly two-minute mark of the footage, the ambulance gets stuck in traffic. An Atlanta Police officer then gets out of his patrol car and tries to sneak up behind the ambulance to sneak a device to try to disable one of the tires.

Another Georgia State Patrol Trooper also tried to do the same, getting closer and crouching down to get the device underneath the tire.

The trooper disabled the tires but did not completely stop the ambulance.

Officers then chase the ambulance into a neighborhood when the ambulance tire appears to slowly begin to come off, and smoke comes from it. The ambulance then comes to a full stop, and officers leave their vehicles prepared to pull the suspect out.

But the ambulance continues and loses the tire completely, and the tire rolls down the street.

With just three tires, the ambulance approaches a dead end but circles around and drives on the lawns of residents' homes.

An officer positioned on the other side then tries to deploy a "stop stick" as it passes, eventually slowing down the vehicle.

After throwing the stick, the officer can be seen from his body camera footage pointing at it to alert and warn other officers of its location.

The video then cuts to a video from an officer's dashcam. The ambulance can be seen on the other side of the road, driving into oncoming traffic.

A GSP Trooper is finally successful after a PIT maneuver, leading the ambulance cross into the embankment and crash into a light pole.

The suspect then runs out of the ambulance and jumps over a fence. Officers then run after the suspect, capturing him. He was taken to the Clayton County Jail.
