FAIRBURN, Ga. -- Fulton County police have charged the man accused of killing one of their own.

Amanuel Menghesha.Manghesha, 42, is accused of shooting at four Fulton County police officers responding to a "shots fired" call in his Cedar Grove Subdivision. One of the officers, Detective Terence Avery Green, was shot in the back of the head and died.

Officers returned fire and Manghesha was struck multiple times. He's in custody and being treated at Grady Memorial Hospital. He was listed in stable condition on Thursday, police said.

Fulton County Police Det. Melissa Parker said Thursday that warrants have been obtained for murder, aggravated assault and possession of firearm during felony charges against Manghesha. Additional charges are pending.

On Wednesday, investigators wrapped up a day-long search of Menghesha's Fairburn home by taking pictures of a vehicle parked in his driveway. They removed bags of evidence and a case for a long gun.

Whether that case held the gun that he used to shoot Officer Green is not known. One neighbor said Menghesha's habits were well-known in the neighborhood.

"I know he had a problem with his back and (he) drinked," said one neighbor. "He drinked a lot, I know that much, but didn't know a whole lot about him."

The propensity to drink a lot was borne out in two incidents at the home reported to police by his fiance. Last August, he was charged with battery for a fight with his stepson. In November, he was charged with two counts of aggravated assault after his fiance told police he was very intoxicated and choked her and his daughter, then pulled out a gun and threatened them.

An adult female who left the house after police finished their search would not stop to speak with the media.

In a Wednesday afternoon press conference, Fulton County Police Chief Cassandra Jones said Manghesha had "violent tendencies", but said she couldn't go into more detail because of the on-going investigation.
