CONYERS, Ga. -- Police have taken two men into custody in connection with a bank robbery in Conyers.
Authorities charged 37-year-old Miles Butler, of Jonesboro, Ga. and 33-year-old Leonard Gibbs of Austell in connection with the robbery of the People’s Bank in the 1700 block of Highway 138 on Nov. 28.
“The outcome of this investigation is a great example professionalism in today’s law enforcement,” Conyers Police Chief Gene Wilson said in a written statement. “It is this cooperation that allows multiple agencies to work together toward a common goal protecting the lives and property of our citizens.”
Conyers police worked closely with several law enforcement agencies around the metro-Atlanta area and the Federal Bureau of Investigation to identify the suspects.
Ultimately, the investigation led police to Leonard Gibbs who had an outstanding arrest warrant for similar robberies in Lilburn, Ga. and Gwinnett County.
From there, authorities from Clayton and Cobb counties helped execute search warrants that ultimately led to information implicating both suspects in the incident.
While keeping watch on Butler’s home, Thursday, the motorcycle driven as the primary getaway vehicle was found and Butler surrendered peacefully.
However, police said Gibbs fled from police on Friday afternoon in a secondary getaway vehicle used in the heist. Gibbs later fled on foot but was located a short time later under a resident’s back porch off of Shenandoah Trail in Austell, Ga.
He was found with two handguns and narcotics, police said, and has multiple outstanding warrants for robbery around metro Atlanta.
