Man dead after firing shots at officers who were responding to 911 call, South Fulton Police say

No officers were hurt in the incident, the police department said.

SOUTH FULTON, Ga. — A man is dead after firing shots at officers who were responding to a 911 call in South Fulton Tuesday evening, according to authorities.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation identified the man who died as 78-year-old Fred Claud Perkins.

Around 6:50 p.m., the South Fulton Police Department said officers were called out to the 4400 block of Roosevelt Hwy in reference to a sexual assault call. The GBI said the victim reported that the suspect shot at her and hit her with his gun.

South Fulton Police Chief Keith Meadows said as officers approached the scene, the suspect fired a shotgun in the officers' direction. Meadows said responding units returned fire as the suspect retreated into a shed.

The police department called out SWAT units to the scene. The GBI said police later found Perkins dead inside the building. A shotgun was also with Perkins, authorities said.

No officers were hurt in the incident, the police department said. Officials are planning to hold a 4:30 p.m. news conference Wednesday to provide an update about the case.

The GBI said it will conduct an independent investigation; once it is complete, the case file will be given to the Fulton County District Attorney's office for review.
