Toledo man convicted of murdering 10-year-old

Dearryl Cornelious, 21, was found guilty on multiple charges for the 2022 shooting death of Damia Ezell. He will be sentenced on Thursday at 10:30 a.m.

TOLEDO, Ohio — A Toledo man has been found guilty of the 2022 shooting death of a 10-year-old girl.

Dearryl Cornelious, 21, was convicted on the following charges for the death of Damia Ezell: one count of aggravated murder, one count of attempt to commit aggravated murder, two counts of felonious assault and one count of discharging a firearm on or near prohibited premises, according to a press release from the Lucas County Prosecutor's Office.

Cornelious will be sentenced on Thursday at 10:30 a.m.

On Feb. 12, 2022, Cornelious, along with two others, were following a vehicle being driven by Damia's uncle, Kenneth White. When they reached the intersection of Collingwood Boulevard and West Delaware Avenue in the Old West End, "they shot White's car over a dozen times with 11 bullets wounding White and one hitting his niece," the press release states.

Cornelious and Byron Cleveland, one of the others in the vehicle with Cornelious, followed White due to a "beef" they had with him, according to the prosecutor's office.

White's nephew, who was also in the vehicle, was not struck by the bullets.

"We are thankful for the jury's service and that we were able to provide justice for the families of Kenneth White and his niece and nephew," said Lucas County Prosecutor Julia Bates. "I hope their families can find a degree of peace. May her memory forever live in their hearts."

Cleveland, 20, was sentenced last year to 39 years total in prison for the murder of Damia as well as the 2022 murder of Cayvon Wells. He has a maximum sentence of 53 years.

Carmanetta Wilson, 23, was the third person in Cornelious' vehicle. She pleaded no contest to obstructing justice and was sentenced last year to 30 months in prison.
