DECATUR, Ga. — A Decatur woman is waiting to learn her sentence after a DeKalb County jury found her guilty of manslaughter in the shooting death of her neighbor, the district attorney said in a news release.
The jury also found 41-year-old Aziza El-Shair guilty of two counts of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony on Friday. El-Shair was originally facing a murder charge, but court records show she was not guilty of the charge.
The deadly shooting happened in the Panthersville neighborhood on May 29, 2019, after police found Derrick Pharr, 33, shot. He was then taken to the hospital where he later died.
According to the district attorney's office, a police investigation revealed the shooting started when El-Shair's then-husband noticed his gun was missing. He "falsely believed" Pharr took his gun. The DA's office said he went to Pharr's family's house down the street and told a relative there that Pharr needed to come to his home.
But when El-Shair arrived home in her car, she got angry when she saw Pharr and asked him to leave. She then followed him after he left and shot at him, hitting him, according to the DA's office. Pharr shot back, but missed, the DA's office added. The defendant then drove around the block and waited for police, officials added.
District Attorney Sherry Boston said El-Shair's sentencing will be announced in the coming weeks.
