GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — A Gwinnett County judge has declared a mistrial on Monday in the murder trial of metro Atlanta coach Bradley Coleman who was shot and killed at a gas station in 2022.
Judge Tamela Adkins' decision came after a comment from the state prosecution was made in front of the jury.
The state was questioning conversations one of the defendant's ex-girlfriend's had with her mother. The defense objected saying the line of questioning was leading.
"The state's comment was so improper and prejudicial that I'm going to have to grant a mistrial for all three defendants," said Judge Adkins.
The Gwinnett County District Attorney's Office weighed in on the matter claiming that there was a "technical issue within the legal proceedings." The office continued with the following statement below.
While the District Attorney's office was against the granting of the mistrial, it was ultimately granted by the Court, and we respect the decision of the Court. We want to assure the community that our commitment to seeking justice remains unwavering. As soon as the Court’s schedule permits, the Gwinnett County District Attorney's office will diligently retry this case and ensure that justice is served for the victim and his family.
We remain steadfast in our commitment to pursuing justice in a manner that upholds the principles of our legal system.
A grand jury indicted three suspects -- Josiah Hughley, Miles Collins and David Jarrad Booker --- for murder, car hijacking, aggravated assault and gang charges in connection to the case.
The deadly shooting happened on July 11, 2022. Police said Bradley Coleman, 29, was pumping air in his tires at the QuikTrip located on Peachtree Parkway when he was carjacked and killed.
As Coleman was pumping air into his tires, one suspect allegedly got in on the driver's side of Coleman's car, attempting to steal it. He then got in on the passenger's side, and officers said the two began to fight. Authorities said a second suspect from the carjacker's car also joined the fight. That's when the deadly shot was fired.
Coleman coached basketball and football at Mountain View High School and Peachtree Ridge High School before he returned to Louisiana and started a fashion brand.

The 29-year-old coach left behind a young daughter. Coleman was described as always smiling and full of life by loved ones.
"He was a leader guiding people in the right direction," Shahid Mitchell, who played football with Coleman in high school, previously said. "He was funny, energetic and just motivational. Anything you wanted to do, he’d believe in you and push you to get there. He wouldn’t just let you say you want to be this. He’d make you that person.”
