FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — The trial has started against a Fulton County ambulance driver accused of crashing while transporting a patient, killing two people back in March.
John Walker is accused of veering into another lane and crashing head on into another driver back on March 20. The crash killed that driver and another EMS employee. He faces four charges in the trial - two counts of second degree vehicular homicide, failure to maintain lane and speeding.
Sarah Simpson was the patient in the back of the ambulance, testifying Thursday about what happened.
"I heard him say **** I dropped my phone, and his voice was going down as if he was leaning over to pick it up," she said.
The supervisor for the transport company also testified, saying Walker told her he had gotten a leg cramp, looked down to rub it, and when he looked back up there was a car in front of him - and that he maintained his lane.
More witnesses are expected to testify at the trial Friday.
Walker's defense attorney said after court that the facts are not on their favor - but the law is , which is what he'll aim to prove as he tries to have the case dismissed.
The crash occurred on Campbellton Road on March 20, involving a Pro Care medical transport vehicle and an SUV.
The Fulton County Medical Examiner identified those killed in the crash as 32-year-old Tiquita Miles of Covington, who worked as a Pro Care EMS employee, and 29-year-old Jada Whatley of East Point.
