TROUP COUNTY, Ga. — A driver is under arrest in Troup County after allegedly crashing a car with five children inside, including a 9-year-old girl who later died.

Georgia State Patrol said the driver, who has not been identified, fled the scene and then was arrested on Monday -- nearly a week after the incident.

It happened July 24, according to GSP, on State Route 1 in Troup County.

GSP said the driver was driving a 2002 GMC Yukon SUV then veered onto the center median from the left lane. At that point the driver "then overcorrected, causing the vehicle to travel back across both southbound lanes and onto the west shoulder."

The SUV then overturned multiple times, ejecting three of the children.

"Tragically, a 9-year-old female passenger succumbed to her injuries several hours after the accident. The other four occupants— a 13-year-old female, an 11-year-old female, an 8-year-old male, and a 5-year-old male -- sustained suspected serious injuries and were transported to a medical facility for treatment," GSP said.

After the driver's arrest Monday, the individual was taken to Troup County Jail.

There were no further details available about the updated conditions of the other four children, or what if any relation they had to the driver.
