ATLANTA — A Fulton County Superior Court jury convicted two gang members – 26-year-old Jaquavious Johnson and 21-year-old Scean Mitchell – in the shooting death of a 23-year-old Atlanta man.
Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard says Johnson and Mitchell approached the victim, Calvin Clark, Jr., outside his southeast Atlanta apartment on July 14, 2017. According to court testimony, a neighbor said Clark must have known he was about to be robbed by the two men because he reached for a handgun.
Before he could pull out his gun, Mitchell and Johnson shot at Clark, hitting him once in the leg. Clark ran back to his apartment but collapsed on his front porch. Johnson took Clark's gun, and along with Mitchell, ran from the scene.
Clark died from massive bleeding before first responders arrived.
According to additional court testimony, one neighbor said she overheard Johnson telling other gang members that he had planned to rob Clark for weeks. Another neighbor testified to telling police that Mitchell had confronted her a day after Clark's murder. She says he threatened her, saying, "So, I heard you've been talking to the detectives about what happened. If I find out that's true, I'm going to put you in a body bag and tie you up and your family will never see you again."
Mitchell and Johnson were both found guilty of murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, participation in criminal street gang activity, armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Mitchell was also convicted on the charge of influencing witness.
Mitchell and Johnson were each sentenced to two consecutive life sentences plus 25 years.
