GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — A mother and son were rushed to the hospital with grave injuries following a shooting in Gwinnett County, according to police.
On Tuesday around 10:30 p.m., Gwinnett County Police Department officers were dispatched to a home on Dayspring Trace in unincorporated Lawrenceville for a domestic dispute.
Officers arrived and parked a few homes away from where dispatch led them, and while walking up, they reported hearing gunshots.
Police said a man was seen driving away while a man, 20, and a woman, 44, lay shot in the driveway. Investigators later said the woman was the mother of the 20-year-old man. Officers aided the two until they were taken to the hospital. The police department said that they had life-threatening injuries.
In an update, Gwinnett County Police said a 43-year-old man was taken into custody several hours later in Warner Robbins in connection to the shooting. He faces two counts of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and theft by taking.
Detectives believe the suspect knew the two victims. They added the motivation behind the shooting appears to be domestic-related. The suspect had previously been in a relationship with the son's mother.
Authorities said the victims remain critically hurt and are being treated at the hospital.
Meanwhile, the suspect is in custody at a detention center in Warner Robbins.
