Witnesses describe havoc of shooting, police chase in and around East Point

The end of the chase shut down I-285 for an extended period of time.

EAST POINT, Ga. -- I-285 is open again between Washington Road and Camp Creek Parkway after an officer-involved shooting, according to the GBI.

East Point police said special operations officers spotted a vehicle driving erratically through the Camp Creek Market Place. Police ran the plates and found out the vehicle was stolen. The officers followed the car into the Publix parking lot on Carmia Drive SW.

But when the officers and marked patrol cars approached the vehicle the suspect accelerated the car toward them, striking an East Point patrol car, according to officials. A witness said he watched that frantic moment.

"And they started shooting and I seen the car ride past," he said. "And the police officer actually ... had to get out the way, too."

Then, witnesses said things got even tenser as gunfire erupted.

"It wasn't no one or two shots," one witness said. "This was booboobooboobooboobooboobooboo-boom."

The suspect then led police on a chase that ended on I-285 near Washington Road. Still, the driver wasn't done, investigators said, and got out of the car and ran as more shots were fired.

The suspect was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment. All East Point officers involved in the incident are on administrative leave while GBI investigates the shooting.
