ATLANTA -- A woman accused of terrorizing two counties and killing a pedestrian told a judge on Thursday that she is the one who fears for her safety.
Kristie Nesby made her first court appearance on charges ranging from hijacking to murder.
Nesby stood unapologetically inside the Cobb County jail telling the judge she wants to be placed in more secure housing.
She said she’s being held in a co-ed infirmary getting numerous questions from other inmates and even staff about the series of crimes she’s accused of committing.
Due to the severity of the charges, Nesby was automatically denied bond but was told by the judge that steps would be taken to keep her safe.
Police said Nesby's crime spree started with a hit-and-run near Interstate 575 around 6 a.m. Wednesday.
She is accused of driving onto a sidewalk along Cobb Parkway about 15 minutes later, fatally hitting 71-year-old Luci James Yarborough, a Burger King employee.
Nesby is also accused of using a gun to steal two cars as she traveled to Atlanta. Police said she ran into several cars while driving on Ponce de Leon Avenue before being arrested.
Now she is charged with nine felonies and two misdemeanors. Police said they would conduct a drug test to see if she was under the influence of any substance. However, they still have not said what they believe was behind her rampage.
