HENRY COUNTY, Ga. — A grand jury in Henry County indicted a woman for falsely accusing a police officer of sexual assault during its last term.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation announced the indictment on Thursday of 60-year-old Cindy Smith.
According to a GBI release, Smith was arrested in early January, after allegedly knocking on the doors of several homes and being involved in a domestic dispute.
Police detained her for disorderly conduct and public intoxication. When she arrived at Henry County Jail, she said the officer who transported her there had sexually assaulted her.
Henry County Police at that time took her for a medical examination and requested GBI’s assistance in conducting an investigation. Cpt. Joey Smith of the Henry County Police Department confirmed that Chief Mark Amerman requested GBI’s assistance “to be open and transparent.”
According to the GBI, the investigation involved witness interviews and video reviews.
The bureau said body camera footage recorded the “entire contact” between Smith and the officer, who was not named.
It did not specify what the footage showed, but Smith was charged with two felony counts of making false statements.
“Of course we are pleased with the outcome of the investigation,” Smith said.
