DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A woman was killed on Saturday after a driver refused to stop for Georgia State Patrol troopers and then crashed into a car in DeKalb County.
Troopers said they saw a golf Infiniti SUV speeding without a driver's license and then blowing through a red light without stopping. When they began pursuing the suspect, he turned into a gas station parking lot and a person inside the car with him jumped out while it was still moving, according to GSP.
The two GSP troopers continued to purse the Infiniti as the suspect drove recklessly through the streets of DeKalb.
As the chase approached the intersection of Memorial Drive and North Hairston Road, the driver ran through another red light where he crashed into a Honda Civic with a woman behind the wheel, troopers said. The driver got out of the Infiniti and ran behind a gas station before being arrested by troopers a short while later.
Troopers quickly ran to the Civic where they rendered first aid to the woman until DeKalb County Fire and AMR EMS arrived on the scene. A short time later, first responders pronounced the woman dead at the scene. Troopers later found out the suspect in the Infiniti had been driving drunk.
The suspect had been wanted by the Newton County Sheriff's Office for felony fleeing, false name and date of birth to law enforcement, and driving with a suspended license. He also had failure to appear warrants out of Douglas County, GSP said.
The driver is now being charged with first-degree vehicular homicide, fleeing, reckless driving, suspended driver’s license, DUI, and obstruction.
