In a day with more than enough tragedy, it's hard to imagine it getting much worse in Henry County. But sheer chance may have been the only thing that saved two other lives.
Deputy Sid Calloway is still in the hospital after being in surgery for quite a while on Friday.
He was one of three members of law enforcement shot in Locust Grove while simply trying to serve a warrant. The same shooting took the life of officer Chase Maddox.
According to investigators, the bullet hit Calloway below his bulletproof vest and struck his abdomen. Even while he was in surgery, a steady stream of people went up to his hospital room.
One of them was his friend of 20 years, Brad Holloway.
The day's shooting had caused an understandable and overwhelming mixture of emotions among Calloway's friends, including Holloway.
"He's a solid, Christian man. You think of integrity, you think of Sid Calloway," he said. "The family said that the surgery went well and they're keeping him sedated so he could rest. They'll keep him sedated overnight and see how he does in the morning."
As far as the second officer who survived, Deputy Michael Corley was released and left the hospital with investigators to recount a moment he will likely never forget. He was only in the hospital for a few hours, suffering only minor injuries. His family expects him to be OK.
His brother told 11Alive the 49-year-old father has been working at the Henry County Sheriff's Office for more than 20 years. And they're just glad he's home.
They credit his vest with saving his life.
