ATLANTA — A dispute over a woman escalated into a gun battle between two men leaving them both dead, Atlanta Police said.
“We’ve got one male deceased on the front porch of the house and the other male is deceased in the living room just inside the front door," said APD Homicide Commander Andrea Webster.
Around noon on Friday, officers received a call about a shooting at a home on Campbellton Road. They arrived at the scene and discovered the bodies.
“At this point, we believe that the two men were arguing over a woman that was also present inside the home with her children," Webster said.
Fortunately, when the gunfire erupted, the woman and her children were not hurt.
“We believe it was a shootout between the two males," Webster said.
“We just believed they were inside of the living room arguing and it appears that they each may have produced a handgun, shot at each other and killed each other," she added.
Investigators also believe there were other witnesses present who might have left the scene.
“They were afraid and we really like for them to call us or return back to the scene," Webster said.
Authorities believe both men were shot in the chest, but Webster said there was a lot of blood at the scene so they aren't sure yet if the men were hit multiple times. They also believe one of the men lived there.
As for the woman, police said she and her children are being evaluated. She is also cooperating with the investigation.
Authorities are still processing the scene and they don't believe they have all of the weapons in their custody yet.
“We don’t know that if maybe someone else was in the house picked them up so the children wouldn’t access them," Webster said. "We are not sure at this point.”
The names of those involved have not been released. However, police did say the woman does have a child by one of the deceased men and they think she was dating the other man.
"We do believe that the female and one of the decedents have had a domestic violence history in the past," Webster added.
Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the shooting to contact them. The investigation is ongoing.
