Because the fish had been left in a hot car without ice for hours, they were taken to a landfill for disposal, the DNR said.

A man was arrested after 259 fish were illegally taken from Lake Oconee, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

DNR officials said that Sgt. Matt Garthwright was checking a fisherman's license when he found a cast net with 42 fish nearby.

Garthright found that none of the fish had hook marks in their mouths. He continued to investigate and found a total of 259 fish that had been illegally taken.

The fisherman was arrested and charged with taking game fish by illegal methods.

In Georgia, it is illegal to fish for game fish, except American shad, hickory shad, channel catfish, blue catfish, or flathead catfish, by any means other than pole and line.

Because the fish had been left in a hot car without ice for hours, they were taken to a landfill for disposal, the DNR said.
