A man escaped after shooting at a DeKalb County Police Officer overnight at the Wesley Club Apartments, the department said.
Major D.L. Jordan said when the officer arrived to the home off Wesley Club Drive, a woman who lived inside of the apartment met with him outside and told him that a domestic incident had occurred with a man that was still inside the apartment.
Jordan said when the officer attempted to go inside, the suspect attempted to ambush the officer and fired several shots in his direction. The officer did not fire shots back and was able to get away and call for backup, Jordan said.
"I clearly describe this as an ambush. The guy was waiting on the officer to enter the apartment and he fired at him," Jordan said.
The officer and woman were not injured from the shooting, according to police. Jordan wouldn't reveal if any kids were inside of the apartment at the time.
"I'm very disturbed by this event tonight. This was clearly avoidable. This male definitely tried to kill one of our officers. This officer is very fortunate," Jordan said.
Jordan said police are looking for the suspect and said they believe he may have escaped through the back door. They are assuming that he is armed and dangerous.
The officer involved in the incident will have counseling resources available to him, Jordan said. Officials made it clear that this officer wasn't a rookie and has been with the department for a few years.
