East Point Police Department honors fallen officers

The ceremony was held at the Law Enforcement Center in East Point.

EAST POINT, Ga. — The East Point Police Department paid tribute to officers who lost their lives in the line of duty during a ceremony Wednesday morning.

The department joins the Nation in Peace Officer’s Memorial Day, which honors federal, state and local officers who died in the line of duty.

“This represents the fallen officers not just here in the city of East Point, but nationally that have given the ultimate sacrifice while serving,” said East Point Police Chief, Tommy Gardner.

Today’s ceremony, held at the Law Enforcement Center, was in remembrance of the following officers from East Point Police Department, as well as many nationwide:

Officer John Charles- died by electrocution while lighting a city lamp on May 15, 1913.

Officer Jack Parker- killed in a motorcycle accident while on patrol on July 28, 1929.

Officer Earl Lee Vickery- killed in a motorcycle accident while chasing a suspect on November 20, 1938.

Officer George Clifford Burnett III- shot and killed by a suspect July 16, 1966.

Officer Joseph Sykes- killed in a motorcycle accident while responding to a call on June 2, 1969.

Officer Christopher Betts- hit by three vehicles while struggling with a suspect on I-285 on December 22, 2002.
