ATLANTA (AP) - Summer break for Atlanta Public Schools students could be longer in coming years as officials are working to set calendars.
News outlets report the school board tentatively approved calendars for the next three years on Tuesday that have school start more than a week later. The later start would shorten students' week-long breaks in the fall and winter to four-day weekends but the school year will still end around Memorial Day.
The proposals still give students a week off at Thanksgiving, two weeks off over Christmas and New Year's Day, and a week-long spring break.
Superintendent Meria Carstarphen told board members administrators created the schedule after conducting a survey that received more than 11,000 responses. She says officials reduced breaks during the school year to schedule more training for teachers.
