Billionaire who promised to pay off Morehouse grads' loan debt helping minorities get STEM internships

Robert. F. Smith was put in the spotlight last month after the Morehouse commencement speaker told the graduates he would tackle their debt.

First, he said he would pay off the student loans of the Morehouse College 2019 graduating class. Now he's helping more students with a new program that connects them to getting paid internships.

Robert F. Smith tweeted that students looking for a summer internship in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics should check out the InternX platform.

InternX, which is provided by the Fund II Foundation, matches talent with internship opportunities across the county, according to the organization's website.

Eligible students are rising sophomores with at least a 2.8 GPA from ethnically underrepresented groups. The paid internship, of at least eight weeks, gives the students training, mentorship, and networking opportunities.

Smith was put in the spotlight last month after the Morehouse commencement speaker told the graduates he would tackle their debt.

"My family is going to create a grant to eliminate your student loans," Smith said during his speech. "You great Morehouse men are bound only by the limits of your own conviction and creativity."

The students were so grateful for the good deed.

“That fact that you don’t have to worry … is an astounding thing,"  Joshua Reed, a 2019 Morehouse grad, explained to 11Alive. "You’re not indebted to anyone, no one is going to come knocking … it really gives you the freedom to do what you really want to do."

Smith founded Vista Equity Partners in 2000 and has since built that firm into a billion-dollar enterprise, investing in technology and software around the world. The firm manages commitments of more than $46 billion and oversees a portfolio of more than 50 software companies globally.

The Fund II Foundation was established in 2014 to make grants to public charities. The website said part of it's mission is to preserve the African-American experience and to sustain critical American values such as entrepreneurial spirit.

For students seeking an internship, they can apply on InternX's website. Companies can also get information on how to participate online.
