KENNESAW, Ga. — February marks Black History Month, and for the last six years, it’s also marked the time for some friendly competition for students in Cobb County.
The 6th Annual Black History Month Bowl in Kennesaw brought out some of the best and brightest middle schoolers in Cobb County, ready to play trivia-style games in head-to-head matches, answering questions surrounding Black History.
Questions touched on several topics, including Motown, historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), professional sports, the Divine 9, academics, STEM, the arts, and literature, among others.
This year, 28 teams of students competed over several weeks. The championship matches took place this past Saturday and brought together friends, families and educators from across Cobb County.
This year, Mount Paran Christian School won the Black History Month Bowl. Awtrey Middle School was this year’s runner-up.
Alois Johnson started the Black History Month Bowl in 2019 while working with the Kennesaw Teen Center. Johnson said he started this as an enrichment idea for an after-school program to give the teens a fun way to learn about Black History Month.
