Georgia families can soon apply for money for kids to attend private school

Georgia officials still have to decide how much money they are going to spend on the program.

ATLANTA — Georgia families will soon be able to apply for money for their kids to attend private schools starting next year.

However, there is still one hang-up. State lawmakers still need to decide how much money they will spend on the program.

The Georgia Promise Scholarship will provide families with up to $6,500. The money can be used for expenditures such as private school tuition, home school supplies, early college courses for high schoolers and more.

The program passed the Georgia legislature earlier in 2024 as part of a nationwide Republican effort to give parents a school choice. Georgia lawmakers will have up to $141 million to spend on the program, meaning that roughly 21,000 families could receive the scholarship.

The students eligible for the scholarship must be enrolled in public schools that rank in the bottom 25% for academic achievement. The state will put out a list of those schools that qualify under that list on Dec. 1.
