ATLANTA — A new report shows that Georgia has been ranked as the least safe state in the country for high school students.
The Scholaroo report ranked each state based on crime rates and safety parameters. Georgia ranked No. 50 overall in the report. Here's why.
Georgia was ranked one of the worst states for exposure to illegal drugs, school shootings, threats of physical attack with weapons and more.
The Peach State was ranked amongst the top states for the least amount of bullying and cyberbullying, according to the report.
Here's how Georgia scored in each category in the Scholaroo report. The following ratings are how the Peach State ranked amongst others, measured on a scale from one to 50:
- 11 - Bullying
- 10 - Cyberbullying
- 48 - Exposure to illegal drugs
- 35 - Feeling safe at school
- 49 - School shootings
- 1 - School safety plans
- 16 - School resource officers
- 38 - Forced sexual intercourse
- 15 - Weapon carried at school
- 45 - Threats of physical attack with a weapon
- 42 - Physical attack with a weapon rate
Although Georgia's overall score tanked to the bottom, it tied No. 1 with multiple states for the school safety plans category.
The report said it grades each state based on a 100-point scale in the 11 metrics. Some categories had more weight than others, which helped calculate its overall score.
Scholaroo ranked Washington as the No. 1 state overall where high school students would feel the safest. Delaware followed the state in its report.
