MARIETTA, Ga. — Weapons detection systems are coming to major school events in Marrietta after the board approved the measure on Tuesday.
The aim is to to bolster security at these events and according to the Marietta School Board, the project was funded by a Georgia school security grant. This comes just two year after the school system and the city police force decided to begin strengthen IT safety.
This newly approved system is designed to provide additional protection for attendees, particularly during events with high attendance, like football games. The system lets individuals walk through it casually and will alert officials if a gun or knife is detected.
That's when an officer would step in and pull that person aside to investigate, allowing the rest of the line to continue walking through.
The board said the weapons detection system, costing just over $116,000 for 16 machines, is also portable, allowing officials to set up anywhere for any school event.
