Morehouse School of Medicine awarded $175M grant to support financial stability

The donation is the largest single gift the institution has ever received.

ATLANTA — Morehouse School of Medicine will receive a historic grant aimed at increasing its financial stability, Bloomberg Philanthropies' Greenwood Initiative announced Monday. The school has been awarded a $175 million donation, the largest single gift it has ever received.

The massive donation will help Morehouse School of Medicine pay for rising tuition costs, support new research, and improve overall operations. The money will more than double the school's endowment, providing long-term stability.

This donation is part of a larger $600 million effort to support Black institutions and communities. Three other historically Black medical schools - Howard University College of Medicine, Meharry Medical College, and Charles R. Drew University of Medicine & Science - also received funding through the initiative.

Morehouse School of Medicine plays a crucial role in training Black doctors. Research shows that Black patients receive better care and have better health outcomes when treated by Black doctors. Yet, only 7% of medical school graduates and less than 6% of all practicing doctors in the U.S. are Black.

This gift from Bloomberg Philanthropies will help Morehouse School of Medicine continue its mission of educating the next generation of Black doctors and addressing health disparities in the community.
