COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Safety is top of mind for many Cobb County parents after they learned two McEachern High School students are accused in a shooting on campus.
A shooting broke out in the parking lot Thursday just before 2 p.m. Two people -- who were not students -- were hurt, according to school officials. However, Cobb County School Board Member Leroy Tre Hutchins said parents have a lot of questions after police said the two suspects arrested in last week’s shooting at McEachern are students.
The parking lot shooting also came just weeks after warrants alleged two teens brought a rifle inside the school in December.
Those incidents are not the only ones Cobb parents have concerns about. Pebblebrook High parents received a letter last Wednesday that school police found two guns in a student’s backpack.
“The last week or so has been very challenging for schools in the southern portion of the county," Hutchins said. "I’m not just a board member for Pebblebrook High School and McEachern High School. My son goes there as well, I’m a parent. So, when I got the call that something had happened at Pebblebrook High School, as a parent, I’m outraged just like every other parent."
McEachern High PTSA President Donna Rogers said Cobb County parents are looking for action.
“To have any kind of weapon at any school, whether it's the school that my child attends or not, it’s alarming for any parent. It’s terrifying the times that we’re living in. So we’ve put together a town hall with our superintendent so that we can talk about policies and procedures so situations like this won’t happen in the future,” Rogers said.
During the meeting Rogers said parents will be able to raise concerns and make suggestions.
The school safety town hall is open to parents all across the district. It will be held at the Patricia Vaughn Cultural Arts Center from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb 8.
