ATLANTA -- As the fall session gets underway in each of the metro Atlanta school systems, several have been busy building new facilities for expanding school bodies.
Others have been replacing aging infrastructure with more modern equipment.
In the Atlanta Public Schools, the new Walden Athletic Complex is set to go online this school year on the site of the old Walden Middle School at 320 Irwin Street, NE - just off the Downtown Connector. The new facility will be ready for use on Sept. 1 and will be used primarily by Grady High School and schools in the Grady High School cluster.
It features a multi-purpose field for soccer, football, lacrosse and other field sports, a baseball and softball field, as well as a field house with restrooms, lockers, concession stand, storage and other facilities.
Cobb County has two new school buildings being added with the start of this school year -- Brumby Elementary School and East Cobb Middle School share a campus in the 800 block of Terrill Mill Road in Marietta, Georgia.

The two new schools are replacing older ones with the same names that have now closed. The old Brumby Elementary School building was located near the intersection of Terrill Mill and Powers Ferry roads and opened in 1966. The old East Cobb Middle School building was on Holt Road across from Wheeler High School and originally opened in 1963.
Also in Cobb County, North Cobb High School is holding a ribbon cutting this week on its new arena, gymnasium and performing arts center. In addition, Campbell High School is unveiling its brand new gymnasium.
Rockdale County has one new school for this coming school year, Pine Street Elementary, which replaces the old school of the same name.
According to officials, the 60-year-old former school building will be renovated and repurposed as the new central office facility for the school system.
Decatur City Schools are continuing to work on the new Talley Street Elementary School, which is slated to open at the beginning of the 2019-2020 school year.
Paulding County says they are about to break ground on a new College and Career Academy which is expected to open in time for the 2019-2020 academic year.
In Henry County, officials said they are not opening anything new this year, but in 2019 they anticipate opening three new school buildings, including a new high school.
