As a new school year begins, parents might be wondering if they should “friend” their child’s teacher on Facebook?
Your instincts might be telling you one thing – but we discovered the answer is a little more complicated than you might think.
According to Atlanta Attorney Matt Simpson, a partner in the education practice group at the law firm Fisher Phillips. the answer is more complicated than parents might think.
He points out some potential downsides:
- It introduces a new dynamic into the relationship
- You could see posts with personal opinions about politics or religion and might not agree.
- You might not approve of some of their extracurricular activities – like a night out on the town.
Matt said teachers also have to be careful about posting any photos or information that might violate a student’s privacy or paint their school in a bad light.
