GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Gwinnett County Public Schools released the results of a poll sent out to parents and students regarding the implementation of clear backpacks in its schools following the deadly shooting at Apalachee High School last month.
The school system said there was a "strong call" for additional steps to help keep students and staff protected in schools.
As school officials began coming up with a plan to further keep students safe, they sent out a three-question poll to all Gwinnett County students, families and staff.
Based on the poll results, 87% of students opposed the clear backpack policy. Adults were more evenly divided -- with 50.7% opposing it and 49.3% supporting it.
"Despite these mixed opinions, we know that safety remains a concern for many in our community. While a clear backpack requirement will not solve every safety issue, it is one more layer we can add to help ensure our schools remain safe and welcoming," the school system said in an online statement.
Gwinnett County Public Schools has decided that, despite the poll results, to still go forward with a clear backpack pilot program. The program will be debuted in several schools that have yet to be named and the feedback will help them assess the positive or negative impact in schools.
"In addition, our research into the possibility of adding weapon detectors in schools continues. It is important for us to fully understand how this would impact our budget, daily operations, and staffing," the school system said in the statement.
