CARNESVILLE, Ga. -- The Georgia State Patrol says 83-year-old James Hylton, Sr., NASCAR's 1966 Rookie of the Year, was killed along with his son in a single-vehicle wreck in Carnesville, Ga. on Saturday.
The Franklin County Coroner told NBC station WYFF that Hylton and his son, 61-year-old James Hylton, Jr., were killed when a truck they were in went off-road, went airborne and flew into the bank of a creek near Interstate 85 around mile marker 164.
The driver of the truck they were in was taken to Greenville Memorial Hospital for treatment and is expected to survive.
The Hyltons both lived in Inman, S.C. Their bodies will be taken to the GBI Crime Lab in Decatur for an autopsy.
The Franklin County Sheriff's Office and the Georgia State Patrol are continuing their investigation.
