Fulton Commissioners approve $2.7 million plan for housing

Fulton County is tackling poverty with a new Housing and Urban Development plan that it claims will create better living conditions for low income people.

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — The Fulton County Board of Commissioners met on Wednesday, July 10, and approved a $2.7 million action plan from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

The plan is made of several pieces that will function to accomplish three main goals.

1. Provide housing

2. Improve living conditions

3. Expand economic opportunities

The commission had to approve three grants for the HUD. The first being a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) for approximately $1.8 million. This money will go towards new housing for low income residents.

The HUD also requested approval for the HOME Investment Partnership (HOME) grant, which would add about $800,000 to their action plan. These funds will allow the community to expand and rehabilitate certain areas. The county is allowed to use this funding to create rental assistance programs, as well.

The final approved grant was the Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG) for about $163,000. This grant will allow Fulton to establish homeless shelters or places to assist those facing emergency situations regarding housing.
