CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. -- Just before 8 a.m Sunday 10 brine tankers pulled out of the GDOT truck barn in Clayton County.

Our crews follow the trucks as they headed north on I-75. GDOT's goal is to pretreat all major roadways in the metro-area.

"Everything inside of 285 as well as (SR) 400, 85 up around the Gwinnett County area, I-20 both east and west outside of the perimeter. We'll also be treating parts of 75 north up towards Chattanooga," said Dale Brantley, the State Maintenance Engineer with GDOT.

After last year's debacle, GDOT bought 10 new brine trucks. Crews also have the ability to make their own brine.

Once their runs are complete, they'll come back to the barn to fill up and head out again.

Each of the tankers carries 5,000 gallons of brine. Crews plan to dump upwards of 200,000 gallons of brine.

The difference between the brine and traditional rock salt is that rock salt only works once the weather has hit. Since the brine is rock salt dissolved in water crews can pretreat the roads which will lower the freezing point.

"If the temperature stays in the 20s we may not actually have freezing to the roadway," Brantley said.
