LIBERTY COUNTY, Ga. — Officials with the Georgia State Patrol confirm a local police chief was killed during a high-speed chase Saturday night.

NBC affiliate WSAV in Savannah, Georgia reports Ludowici Police Chief Frank McClelland Jr. died while responding to the incident.

According to reports, a Liberty County deputy tried to stop 23-year-old Daniel Hill's car at around 7 p.m. on Leroy Coffer Highway.

Hill reportedly refused to stop, leading authorities on a high-speed chase that reached speeds of up to 100 mph through Liberty County and into Long County.
