It began with a hack that crippled the city of Atlanta. Months later came indictments against Iranian nationals and sanctions against the government.
Now, according to reports from a cybersecurity firm, the Iranian hackers are back. This time, they're targeting the private emails of nuclear scientists and U.S. Treasury agents.
"It's believed that this was instigated not directly by the Iranian government, but by actors who are being encouraged by the Iranian government," said Kennesaw State University Professor Andrew Green, who has studied the latest attacks.
In November, the Justice Department indicted two Iranian nationals, Faramarz Shahi Savandi and Mohammad Mehdi Shah Mansouri, for the hack against the city of Atlanta.
Earlier that month, the Trump administration levied new sanctions against the Iranian government.
The Iranian government has denied they're behind the attacks.
