ATLANTA — One half of music’s biggest recording acts from Georgia has officially become a Disney princess.
Halle Bailey, of the R & B duo Chloe x Halle, will star as Ariel in a live action version of “The Little Mermaid,” Variety reports.
Production is expected to begin early 2020. Melissa McCarthy has already been tapped to play Ursula, the sea witch in the original animated film.
"After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role,” said director Rob Marshall in a statement.

Bailey is no stranger to the acting world, she and her sister Chloe star in the hit Freeform series, “grownish,” now approaching its third season. The duo star as twin sisters Jazz and Sky --- fan-favorite characters on the show.
The critically-acclaimed series is a spin-off of the hit ABC series “black-ish,” from Kenya Barris.
Prior to that, the singers from Mableton, Georgia recorded wildly successful covers of the favorite songs on YouTube.
Last year, Chloe and Halle performed for a sold-out crowd of all ages at Centre Stage in Atlanta. The ladies were humbled by their success and a growing fanbase that virtually began on social media.
With a few acting opportunities in films like "Fighting Temptations", "Last Holiday" and "Meet The Brown's," the Bailey sisters were never shy to be in front of the camera. But they also hadn't showcased their musical talents - which also includes playing live instruments - until they began uploading music covers on YouTube.
"Ever since we were little girls, our parents instilled in us the 'do it yourself' mentality. If you don't know, figure it out," Chloe told The A-Scene. "And my sister and I, we've kind of grew up with that thinking - and I remember before the YouTube covers - we were writing songs, and working on our craft. Deep down we always knew our dreams would come true somehow, some way."
Their lives changed forever in 2013 after diving into Beyonce's "Pretty Hurts," from the singer's self-titled album that dropped just a few weeks before.
Not only did the clip become a viral sensation, garnering millions of views, it also got praise from Beyonce and her management team, who brought the singers into their arms at Parkwood Entertainment. A career under the direction of the star's powerhouse team is now the premiere act.
“I’m so grateful and so fortunate to grow a wonderful fanbase on social media on YouTube and online," Halle added. "You know, we’re really grateful for all the opportunities that came from it."
The original “Little Mermaid” came out in 1989, and follows mermaid Ariel who dreams of leaving the sea and falling in love with a human.
