Food bank to serve Hampton families at Atlanta Motor Speedway

Organizers say Hampton residents and families may receive 30 to 40 pounds of food items for free.

HAMPTON, Ga. — Hampton residents and families will be able to receive 30 to 40 pounds of free food at a mobile market being set up at Atlanta Motor Speedway the next two Fridays.

The speedway, which is in Hampton, close to 30 miles south of Atlanta, said in a release that the market will open at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 17, and again the next week on April 24. It is being organized by AMS, Hampton Elementary and the Atlanta Community Food Bank.

It will be open to all Hampton residents and families. 11Alive has reached out for clarification as to whether it will be open in any way to those from surrounding communities.

To maintain social distancing, organizers said all items will be pre-bagged and placed in the backseat or trunk of vehicles for families.

"Our Speedway has always had a sense of community. We take pride in looking for ways to give back to Henry County and the residents of the surrounding area, particularly during these uncertain times," said Brandon Hutchinson, the speedway's executive vice president and general manager. "That's why we're proud to be teaming up with Hampton Elementary and the Atlanta Community Food Bank to put on these market days and make a positive difference for Hampton families."

This is not the first time the race track has been rearranged as a food bank, according to AMS. On April 3 more than 2,200 people were provided food during a similar event.

Those who wish to pick up food at the event are asked to enter on Friday via the speedway's main entrance off Highway 19/41.
