Coronavirus cases and deaths rise in evening update
The 7 p.m. update from the Georgia Department of Public Health shows confirmed cases in the state have risen to 12,261 with 432 deaths. Of the total number of cases, 2,491 have resulted in hospitalization - or roughly 20 percent.
Fulton County continues to lead in the number of cases with 1,446. However, it has the second-most deaths behind Dougherty County in south Georgia which has 72. The south Georgia county also has the second-highest number of confirmed cases with 1,102.

Braves to pay employees through at least May 31
According to multiple sources, the Atlanta Braves have notified all of their full-time and part-time employees that they would be paid through May 31.
This becomes the first known instance of a Major League Baseball team assuring their workers that they would be taken care of beyond the end of April or beginning of May.
While that's the case with Major League Baseball, other professional team owners have made similar moves.
Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said he would continue paying his employees through the outage that began with the NBA's decision to halt the season on March 11.
Newton County Sheriff, judges work jointly to reduce population of jail
Newton County Sheriff Ezell Brown along with the county's judges have been actively working to reduce the population of the Newton County Jail in order to prevent an outbreak of COVID-19 there.
In a Facebook post on Thursday afternoon, the sheriff's office said the jail's population had been reduced by more than 100 inmates by Thursday, April 9.
"Inmate residents will continue to be released following court orders," the post said, in part. "Active work-release inmates and weekenders will be monitored by Newton County deputies following release."
Brown said that he feels that through early work and safeguards against the threat of COVID-19 early-on, the threat of an outbreak at the jail has been minimized.
"We will continue to work daily with the Newton County Judges, the District Attorney's office, the state, and probation offices to continue the effort in reducing the jail population," Brown said. "The health and safety of our entire staff and inmate residents have been a top priority."
More than 12,000 confirmed cases, with 428 deaths statewide
The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in Georgia has topped the 12,000 mark across the state, according to the latest figures from the Georgia Department of Public Health. There are now 428 deaths being reported statewide.
Fulton County continues to record the largest number of COVID-19 cases in the state with 1,422. Fifty people have died in Fulton from the virus. Dougherty County remains a major hotspot, with 1,076 cases and 69 deaths from the virus.
DeKalb County reports 835 cases and 13 deaths; Cobb County has 696 cases and 33 deaths from coronavirus. Gwinnett County report 675 cases, Clayton reports 331, Hall County has 275 cases and Henry County reports 249 cases.
According to the data reported by the Department of Public Health, 2,149 of the cases across the state are from individuals of black or African American descent. Non-Hispanic whites make up 1,548 of the cases. Another 6,933 are listed as being of "unknown" racial makeup.

Rockdale County Sheriff shares message while recovering from COVID-19
Rockdale County Sheriff Eric Levett is recovering from coronavirus and has been self-quarantining at home.
In a Facebook video post on the Rockdale County Sheriff's page on Friday, Levett said he is feeling much better and looking forward to returning to work at some point next week.
Levett had initially started to feel ill after coming into contact with another employee of the sheriff's office who had been diagnosed with COVID-19.
80 long-term care facilities in Georgia have COVID-19 outbreaks
The Georgia Department of Public Health reported on Friday that COVID-19 has been reported at 80 long-term care facilities across the state as of April 8.
This is according to a report provided by Gov. Brian Kemp's office on Friday evening and represents an increase from the 47 facilities reported one week ago.
According to the report, the number of cases varies from as many as 62 cases at one facility in Dougherty County to a number of facilities across the state with only one case.
The report does not separate cases between patients and staff.
Confirmed cases top 11,850, with 425 deaths reported
The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in Georgia increased again Friday evening, and stands at 11,859, according to the latest figures from the Georgia Department of Public Health. There are 425 deaths being reported, with another 2,454 people hospitalized with the virus.
Fulton County alone now has more than 1,400 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and is reporting 50 deaths from the virus. Dougherty County is reporting the second-highest number of cases at 1,072 and 68 deaths.
Only four of Georgia's 159 counties - Taliaferro, Glascock, Evans and Montgomery - do not have any reported cases of the virus.
According to the data, Black Americans account for 2,117 of the cases in Georgia, while 1,532 non-Hispanic whites have been diagnosed with the virus. There are 6,716 people with the virus listed with an "unknown race."
