INDIANAPOLIS — The company that operates malls around the country - and several in Georgia - has announced it will be closing them all in response to the coronavirus outbreak.
Simon Property Group made the decision on Wednesday and said that it had done so "after extensive discussions with federal, state and local officials" regarding the pandemic virus that has now been found in all 50 states.
"The health and safety of our shoppers, retailers, and employees is of paramount importance and we are taking this step to help reduce the spread of COVID-19 in our communities," said David Simon, the chairman, CEO and president of Simon.
The mall closures will directly impact seven Georgia locations including the state's largest mall, the Mall of Georgia, along with Lenox Square, Phipps Plaza, Sugarloaf Mills, Town Center at Cobb, North Georgia Premium Outlets and Calhoun Outlet Marketplace.
The plan goes into effect today, March 18, at 7 p.m. and will end on March 29.
At least one Atlanta mall is adjusting their hours. Greenbriar Mall in Southwest Atlanta is adjusting their hours as follows:
- Monday-Saturday 11 a.m. - 6 p.m.
- Sunday 12 p.m. - 6 p.m.
