FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Fulton County Schools will go to a one-day-a-week schedule for meal distribution, giving all five days' worth of meals to students in one swoop.
The school district did that yesterday for this week, a move that was driven by new guidance for district employees who have been working sites distributing the meals to wear masks.
Fulton County Schools Chief Operating Officer Patrick Burke said during Thursday's virtual board of education meeting that they would make that arrangement permanent going forward.
The 21 sites at which meals are distributed will do so on Wednesdays from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. The move follows a similar one made by Atlanta Public Schools earlier this week.
Anticipating a potential surge in demand given the one-day availability of the meals, Burke said the district could "adjust capacity at other sites to meet the demand that were seeing within our community."
If food were to run out at one site, he said, they would prepare to direct families to a nearby site.
The meal packages include 10 total meals, a breakfast and lunch meal for five days of the week.
This week, with the one-day distribution structure, Burke said the district passed out 67,000 meals. To date, they have distributed 233,920 meals.
