ATLANTA — One neighborhood is trying to make sure seniors are taken care of during this pandemic.
Brittany Eddy is a nurse practitioner at Grady Hospital where she's seen patients with COVID-19.
"Unfortunately, a lot of the patients that are coming in are so sick that sometimes there's not much that can be done for them, so it's just really important to me that we can just do everything that we can to keep people safe and healthy at home," Eddy told 11Alive's Elwyn Lopez.
Outside of the hospital, she's teamed up with the Kirkwood Neighbors Organization to help at-risk seniors by pairing them with a neighbor.
“So far, we have 30 households that have been identified, and we actually have more than 57 volunteers, which is great," she added.
She said it goes beyond just delivering groceries. It's also about provided a social safety net during this time.
"Know that someone’s thinking of them, you know, it might just be a conversation, kids may make notes and put them in their mailboxes," Eddy explained.
This isn't the first time Kirkwood has rallied around its elderly neighbors. Kirkwood Cares has helped dozens pay for home repairs over the years.
That's how Eddy said she and others are finding those most in need.
"While it's great to be on the front lines here at the hospital, my mind sort of thinks in a public health sort of way, and it's - what can we do in the community to keep people safe and healthy in the community so that they don't have to come to the hospital," Eddy added.
