State and federal officials with the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are continually monitoring the spread of the virus. They are also working hand-in-hand with the World Health Organization to track the spread around the world and to stop it.

Key Facts: 

  • There have been 1,649 deaths in Georgia, with the state's earliest reported death on March 5. Over the last 14 days (5/5-5/18), the average daily increase in newly reported deaths was 25.36 Over the previous 14-day period (4/21-5/4), the average daily increase in newly reported deaths was 30.36.
  • There have been 38,283 cases confirmed in Georgia, with the state's earliest reported case on Feb. 1. Over the last 14 days, the average daily increase in newly confirmed cases was 603.14. Over the previous 14-day period, the average daily increase in newly confirmed cases was 662.21
  • There have been 6,992 total patients hospitalized in Georgia during the pandemic, according to the Department of Public Health's cumulative total. Over the last 14 days, the average daily increase in new patients was 95.57. Over the previous 14-day period, the average daily increase in new patients was 125.21
  • The Georgia Emergency Management Agency began reporting current statewide hospitalizations on May 1. That day they reported 1,500 current hospitalizations. By the most recent report on May 17, there were 1,010 current hospitalizations.
  • Gov. Brian Kemp's statewide shelter-in-place order expired at midnight on April 30. However, his order for the elderly and medically-fragile remains in effect until June 12.
  • All public school buildings in Georgia are closed through the end of the school year
  • Public Health Emergency remains in effect.

Latest number of COVID-19 cases reported

The latest number of confirmed COVID-19 cases for the state of Georgia have been released by the Department of Public Health.

The DPH website says there are now 38,283 confirmed cases and 1,649 deaths reported. These are the latest numbers as of 7 p.m. Monday. 

Of the total of confirmed cases,  3,751 are in Fulton, 2,856 are in DeKalb, 2,680 are in Gwinnett, 2,429 are in Cobb, 2,164 are in Hall. For a breakdown by county, view the 11Alive interactive map.

They said 6,992 patients have been hospitalized with COVID-19.

Kemp: State sees improvement in testing for COVID-19

Gov. Brian Kemp said Georgia now ranks 21st in the country on the current percentage of total population tested for the virus. Kemp said this is up from ranking at 46 a month ago. Among states with more than 5 million residents, Georgia ranks 8th out of 23 states.

"Our focus on increased testing is yielding strong results as the Georgia National Guard, Georgia Department of Public Health, and various public and private-sector partners continue to work non-stop to improve access to COVID-19 testing for Georgians," Kemp said. "We are working tirelessly to move the needle on testing as we take measured steps to safely reopen the Peach State."

The state said Georgia has tested 3.3 percent of its total population for COVID-19 with 364,289 tests completed. 

Any Georgian can now be tested for COVID-19. As the state continues to ramp up testing, they said the number of positive cases may rise.  However, the state officials said the percentage of positive COVID-19 tests is now at 10.5 percent, which they said is down from 16 percent two weeks ago.

Nordstrom stores in Georgia to reopen

Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack stores in Georgia will reopen to customers this Thursday, they announced today. 

"We are excited to bring our employees back to work and look forward to welcoming customers in our doors so we can continue serving them in our stores," they said in a statement.

They said all employees will go through a health screening when they arrive to work. Customers and employees will also be provided with face masks.

Cases in Georgia top 38K

The Georgia Department of Health announced new cases of COVID-19 on Monday. As of 1 p.m., there are 38,081 confirmed cases of the virus and 1,642 deaths reported. 

Of the 38,081 confirmed cases, 3761 are in Fulton, 2819 are in DeKalb, 2621 are in Gwinnett, 2418 are in Cobb and 2159 are in Hall. For a breakdown by county, view the 11Alive interactive map.

They said 6,916 patients have been hospitalized with COVID-19.

Atlanta councilwoman sponsoring free testing

Atlanta city council member Andrea Boone is sponsoring a free COVID-19 testing event with The Family Health Centers of Georgia and MARTA on Tuesday, May 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the parking lot of the H.E. Holmes MARTA Station. 

Drive-through and walk-up testing will be available, they said, and residents are encouraged to make appointments. For more information, call 1-800-935-6721. Free surgical masks will be provided to those receiving tests while available.

Chamblee city council meeting attendee tests positive

Someone who attended the City of Chamblee regularly scheduled public hearing and meeting at the Chamblee Civic Center on Thursday, May 14 tested positive for COVID-19. 

They said the person was not  symptomatic at the meeting, but became ill Friday night and tested positive for COVID-19 on Sunday. The person was said to be wearing a mask. 

At the meeting, chairs were spaced ten feet apart and temperatures were taken of all attendees, per CDC recommendations, city officials said. 

The city notified attendees who provided phone or email contact information. All city employees who attended will self isolate for 14 days, and the civic center will be cleaned and remain closed for 10 days.
