ROCKDALE COUNTY, Ga. — A sheriff who, just days earlier, announced he had placed himself under a voluntary self-quarantine has tested positive for COVID-19.
Rockdale County Sheriff Eric J. Levett released a statement on April 1 announcing publicly that he had gone into a 14-day quarantine per his doctor's advice after not feeling well on March 27. At that time, he also announced that he was being tested for coronavirus.
The test came back positive.
"Although this was not the news that I was expecting, it just further let me know how seriously we all need to take the epidemic and abide by the orders that have been put in place," he said in a statement released by the sheriff's office.
The sheriff said that he has continued working from home during the quarantine and thanked the public for their well-wishes.
In his previous message, the sheriff said that he had notified all of his command staff through texts of his illness - at the time not confirmed to be COVID-19. He also notified locals through email.
