UGA students, staff create face shields for healthcare workers

The College of Engineering and the instrument design and fabrication shop are constructing four simple parts for hospitals to assemble face shields.

ATHENS, Ga. — As healthcare workers fight the good fight with limited supplies, the University of Georgia is coming together to help them stay safe.

The College of Engineering and the instrument design and fabrication shop are constructing four simple parts for hospitals to assemble face shields. With their 3-D printing technology, students and staff are able to make 130 shields a day until they run out of materials.

"I think this is a great collaboration between our university, the USG, and the healthcare within the state ... because this is obviously a need and we're just happy to meet that need," Donald Leo, the dean of the College of Engineering said.

The university plans to deliver 200 face shields each to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center and St. Mary's Hospital on Friday and will continue production to assist more hospitals statewide.
