One sick in Georgia after recall of queso fresco and cotija cheese products over listeria outbreak

ATLANTA — One listeria illness has been reported in Georgia linked to a recall issued Tuesday for Rizo-López Foods queso fresco and cotija cheese products.

According to the CDC, the recall is nationwide and applies to products sold under numerous brands including: 

  • Campesino
  • Casa Cardenas
  • Don Francisco
  • Dos Ranchitos
  • El Huache
  • Food City
  • La Ordena
  • Rio Grande
  • Rizo Bros
  • San Carlos
  • Santa Maria
  • Tio Francisco
  • 365 Whole Foods Market

In addition to the one sick person in Georgia, one death has been reported in California and one death has been reported in Texas.

More than two dozen other listeria illnesses have been reported in states including Florida, North Carolina, Tennessee, Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, California and Texas.

The CDC reports 23 hospitalizations in all. 

Here's what the CDC says you should do:

  • Do not eat any recalled cheeses or dairy products.
    • Throw them away or return them to where you bought them.
  • Clean the refrigerator, containers, and surfacesthat may have touched the recalled products.
    • Listeria can survive in the refrigerator and can easily spread to other foods and surfaces.
  • Call a healthcare provider right awayif you have these symptoms after eating recalled products:
    • Pregnant people usually have fever, muscle aches, and tiredness.
    • People who are not pregnant usually have fever, muscle aches, and tiredness. They may also get a headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, or seizures.
