ATLANTA — A new healthcare clinic meant to alleviate a healthcare desert in Fulton County opened to the public Monday.
Fulton County leaders, alongside Morehouse School of Medicine officials, gave a first look at 'Morehouse Healthcare' in East Point. The clinic will cater to Atlantans in central and south Fulton County.
Residents will have access to comprehensive primary care, pre-natal and behavioral health care services, according to Morehouse officials. Once fully implemented, the East Point clinic will have over 20 exam rooms and extended hours of operation.
The clinic comes after Wellstar Atlanta Medical Center shut down in November and Wellstar East Point closed its emergency department last year. The closures left many without a nearby hospital, resulting in Grady Memorial being the only level 1 trauma center within an hour of Atlanta.
To further expand healthcare services in Fulton County, Dr. Montgomery Rice, president of Morehouse School of Medicine, explains officials are looking to gain insight from residents on what to do next.
"We're going to be listening to the community for two things. What are the services that we are still missing as we open up this one facility," Dr. Rice said. "The second thing is what type of facility needs to be our next and where it needs to be."
County leaders approved the deal between Fulton County and Morehouse in April.
Currently, the clinic is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for anyone looking to make an appointment.
