ATLANTA — Piedmont Atlanta Hospital has opened an upgraded neonatal intensive care unit -- enhancing the space for families whose babies need more care and medical attention.
The hospital made the announcement Tuesday stating the Jan & John Portman neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is triple its former size. This update is part of the renovation of the women's center at the hospital to become the Grass Family Women's Center, according to a release.
More space in the NICU has created several enhancements for families and care teams. The previous open-bay concept in the facility has been replaced with private rooms. There are also resources like breast milk storage, laundry and sleeping quarters for on-call physicians. The entrances within the women's center to the NICU and standard nursey are also separate.
Chief Executive Officer of Piedmont Atlanta, Patrick Battey, said the surroundings fit the medical care people are receiving.
"We are so glad to be able to give parents facing the difficult situation of a NICU stay the secluded, comfortable space they deserve to bond with the newest member of their family," Battey said.
The NICU has 23 rooms that can accommodate one baby, as well as two more rooms that can accommodate multiples.
This expansion is part of upgrading the women's center at Piedmont Atlanta, which already includes modernized Labor & Delivery rooms. Once completed, the center will have its own floor at the hospital.
